The large publishers will specialize in one field so they know their business and their customers inside and out. They will be experts at advertising your book they will have contracts with the largest booksellers.

Once you have done this, contact several of your top choice publishers and discuss you manuscript. Do not pick just one publisher because you may not have any luck with your top choice. Another thing you can do that may help in making your choice is that when you have you list narrowed to the top five you can also research the editors that work for the publisher. Researching the editors can give you a good idea of the ones that may be more interested in your manuscript.
