The word free makes it tempting to many people that enjoy entering contest but there are good reasons to skip poetry contest. Contest scammers often send out letters trying to entice you into entering their free contests. Then they compliment your writing skills telling you that your chances are very good at being published. They will seem to be legitimate in what they say and may even offer information about previous contest winners. It can be hard telling sometimes if the contests are a scam or not unless you know something about the people offering these contests. One way to know if you are being scammed is if they require you to buy so many copies of the book that is being published. Another way to know is if they call you the lucky winner. They make everyone a winner that they can get to sign up for their contests. Then they make their profits from you purchasing the books.

Do not be fooled by being offered big prizes. This should be a sign to make you wonder how much it is going to cost you. Some contest will offer big money prizes, cars, trips and so on. The chances of winning these prizes are not good and you will most likely be paying more out then you will be getting back. There are poetry contest that make their profits by charging to read your poems or to enter their contest. A poetry contest that is legitimate would not make you pay entry or reading fees. These are just a few reasons why you should skip poetry contests. There are many legitimate poetry contest but beware of the ones that try to take your money and do nothing for you in return.
